Business Name: Alexandria Honey Company 

How long have you been in business in Alexandria?

1.5 years 

Tell me a little about your business: Alexandria Honey Company is located in the West End – our hives are in our backyard! We produce local raw honey and beeswax candles. Honeybees generally forage within a few miles giving our honey a unique local flavor. Our candles are hand poured in small batches and are made of 100% beeswax with cotton wicks. We don’t add any fragrances or dyes, and they retain the natural subtle honey scent. 

How has the SBDC supported your business?  

Starting a business requires lots of paperwork, and SBDC helped us navigate the process and be confident that we were off to a good (and legal) start. 

Something unique you are doing this holiday season with your business. Any holiday deals?  

We are offering a few fun products for the holiday season including beeswax ornaments and bayberry candlesticks (made with real bayberry wax). Legend has it that burning a bayberry candle will bring good luck in the new year! 

Favorite thing about the holiday season in Alexandria: We love to drive around to see all the beautifully decorated houses throughout the city. 

Something you are thankful for: We are so thankful for the support we have received from the community, including our wonderful neighbors who have embraced our unconventional hobby. 

Favorite Alexandria business to visit during the holidays (besides your own): We can’t choose only one! We like to support local makers and artists at Made In ALX and Shop Made in Virginia. We also enjoy visiting Red Barn Mercantile, Penny Post and Old Town Books. 

Favorite holiday tradition: Visiting Santa at Fort Ward 

Highlight of the year: Our products are now available in four brick-and-mortar stores in the region – Made In ALX, Shop Made in Virginia, Unwined (Belle Haven) and Breadfurst.
